  • 1981 Football Team

    1981 Football Team ·

1981 Football TeamThe 1981 Monte Vista football team was coming off a 7-2-1 season in 1980, the best in school history. The reins of the team had been turned over to a new head coach, Rob Stockberger. The team ended the pre-season with a loss to a tough Ygnacio Valley team and then roared through the rest of the regular season and into the NCS playoffs without another loss. In the NCS 3A Championship game, they met Ygnacio Valley again and crushed the pioneers 38-21. The team had a solid offense, but a defense that just would not allow teams to score, fashioning five shutouts, and four in a row headed into the championship game. With that win, the 11-1 Mustangs were ranked as the No.1 Class 3A team in the state by Cal-Hi Sports and set a standard of excellence for future Monte Vista seasons and players.

  • 1987 Football Team

    1987 Football Team ·

1987 Football TeamThere were lofty expectations for Rob Stockberger’s 1987 Monte Vista team, coming off a single loss to De La Salle in the 1986 season’s NCS Championship. But the Mustangs met them as they rolled through the season and multiple playoff rounds undefeated. Unlike the school’s first championship team in 1981, this team was a powerhouse on offense and defense – scoring more than 30 points per game and winning by an average of 24 points. But the EBAL and NCS champions would face their biggest test vs. De La Salle in the NCS championship game. It was a brutal battle at the Oakland Coliseum, but the Mustangs came out on top edging the Spartans 14-13, and breaking their 44 game winning streak. As a result of this win, Monte Vista finished the season undefeated, with the most victories in one season in school history and was ranked #21 nationally by the USA Today newspaper.

When he finished his career with the Mustangs, over 20 colleges sought to get him to continue his career at the next level, but in the end, he selected UCLA. During his junior year, Kanellis rushed for over 1000 yards and scored 20 touchdowns in a 9 game season. His senior year, Kanellis scored the only touchdown in the Mustangs win in the first game ever against San Ramon Valley. Jeff called that game the biggest thrill he had in football, something he looked forward to since starting to help build the program during his freshman year. Despite developing an ankle injury in the fifth game of the season, an injury that hampered him the rest of the year, Kanellis still ended up close to another 1,000 yard season - sixth in the East Bay.
